Fussiness – How to Soothe Your Child

A child might be fussy because its digestive system is upset.

Is your child kicking up a fuss? A bloated belly or a red, flushed face when he or she cries? Frequent fussiness especially during the night will cause distress to any child’s parents. In early childhood, your child’s digestive system and communication skills are not yet fully developed, and there is a lot to understand about your child and his or her developing body. Here’s what you can do if your child is crying and can’t be comforted.

Crying

The fussing and crying of a child can have different meanings, but these are often caused by gut discomfort and tummy cramps. There is also a possibility that your child is suffering from colic, which is the frequent, prolonged and intense crying of a child. When in doubt, visit a paediatrician for advice.

If your kid is exhibiting signs of colic, try cuddling him or her because your child might just be yearning for physical closeness. You can also address your child’s desire for a sense of security by swaddling him or her, which will also keep your child warm.

While the exact cause of your child’s colic is yet to be ascertained, you can explore the possibilities that it might be due to an imbalance of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract, or specific types of intolerances.

We hope that these tips will help you calm your child the next time he or she is distressed. Colic is a natural occurrence as your child’s body develops and grows stronger. As always, in times of doubt, it is recommended that you bring your child to see a paediatrician.
