6 Easy Tips to Practise Green Parenting

green parenting

As people become more aware of how our actions impact the environment, many mums like you are turning to greener and more sustainable parenting practices. These not only help to reduce the carbon footprint of both you and your child in the short term, but could also be the start of a green “legacy” that is passed down through generations.

For those keen on going green, here are some tips to get you started on your sustainable parenting journey:

Switch to eco-friendly diapers

Most mums know that eco-friendly diapers, such as reusable cloth diapers, generate less waste when compared to disposable diapers. Not so well-known is that they could save you more money in the long run. Choosing cloth diapers free from chemical substances – such as chlorine, bleach, or fragrances – is also better for children with sensitive skin.

Look for second-hand clothes

Let’s face it – children grow really fast. The onesie that fits perfectly today might not fit as well a month later. So why spend money on new clothes your child will quickly outgrow? Instead, try asking family and friends with children if they have any hand-me-downs they’re looking to get off their hands.

Buy toys made from renewable sources

When it comes to toys, there are several eco-friendly options to choose from. Go for toys made from non-toxic, renewable materials such as wood, 100% rubber, and wool. They are safer for children and also more durable – meaning they can be enjoyed by more than one child.

>

Teach your child about water and energy conservation

Talk about the importance of conserving water and make it part of your child’s routine. For instance, teach them to turn off the tap instead of letting water run when brushing teeth or washing hands. Switching off lights and electronics when not in use is also an energy-saving habit worth instilling in them. Just make sure their hands are dry when doing so!

>

Grow your own food

Try supplementing your grocery runs with home-grown food. Growing simple herbs and vegetables at home will get your child closer to nature, and help them better appreciate the effort that goes into food production. And of course, eating food they grew themselves is also a big thrill!

>

Make recycling part of your child’s life

Find every opportunity for your child to practice recycling. This can be as simple as repurposing empty bottles or boxes, or doing fun DIY projects with these items. You can also ask your child to help you sort the recyclables at home. Done often enough, recycling can become second nature to them and something they carry to adulthood.
