Feeding your Newborn

Your baby will get all that he needs from breastmilk or an iron fortified infant formula until he is about 4 – 6 months old. There is no need to supplement with water, juice or cereal at this time.

If feeding on demand, breastfed babies will suckle for 10 – 15 minutes on each breast every 2 – 3 hours. By 4 – 8 weeks, your baby should be on a more predicitable schedule.

POINTS TO AVOID

Do NOT:

  • Give breastfed baby the bottle before he is 4 – 6 weeks old.
  • Prop the bottle while feeding.
  • Put cereal in the bottle.
  • Feed honey.
  • Introduce solids before 4 – 6 months.
  • Heat bottles in the microwave.
  • Feed goat’s milk.
